The bed is firm. Not supportive—firm. The mattress is industrial-grade, designed to be washed frequently and to last through thousands of guests. It's not uncomfortable enough to keep you awake, but it's not comfortable enough to feel like rest. Your back knows the difference after the first week.
Here's the calculus: a $100/night interior cabin saves you roughly $50 to $80 per night compared to an oceanview cabin in the same category. Over a month, that's $1,500 to $2,400 in savings. Over three months, it's $4,500 to $7,200. That's real money. But you're spending it by trading away sleep quality, air quality, natural light, and psychological comfort. For a liveaboard, those aren't luxuries—they're infrastructure.
The better move, if you're planning to live aboard for months, is to find an oceanview cabin in the same price tier, or to move up one category to a cabin with a window and slightly better placement on the ship. The price difference is often smaller than you think, especially if you're booking a repositioning sailing or a last-minute distressed fare. A cabin that costs $120 or $130 per night but has a window, is located away from the engine room, and has slightly better ventilation is worth the extra $20 or $30 a night. That's $600 to $900 a month more—a meaningful difference, but not a dealbreaker for someone serious about living this way.
The other option is to rotate. Spend a month on a cheap interior cabin, then take a month off ship, then come back. The break resets your tolerance for the conditions. You're not accumulating the fatigue and the psychological wear of continuous confinement in a small, dark, noisy space.
Wright's experience is a useful data point because it names the actual problem. It's not that interior cabins are unlivable. It's that the cheapest ones are unlivable for the duration most liveaboards are planning. The window matters less than the location, the air quality, and the noise floor. If you're going to live on a ship, you're paying for housing. Make sure the housing actually works for living, not just for sleeping.
